Quick decision

I just experienced a ransomware attack

Files are encrypted, a ransom note is on screen, or your machine is locked. You're in the middle of it or just came through it. This is damage control, not a software purchasing decision.

Do not pay the ransom. Disconnect from the network immediately. If you have backups — restore from them. If you don't, check No More Ransom (nomoreransom.org) for free decryptors. Then rebuild your security posture from scratch.

NoteRansomware recovery without prior backups is genuinely difficult. Many strains have no decryptor. The honest answer after a successful ransomware attack is: some data may be permanently lost. Backups are the only real protection — no antivirus is a substitute.
