Quick decision

I just got a new computer and want to set it up right

Fresh machine, clean slate. You want to set up security properly from the start — not deal with infections after the fact. The question is what actually belongs in that initial setup and what's overkill.

Bitdefender is the default right answer — install it before you install anything else, let Autopilot run. If you're on Windows, check whether your license includes Microsoft 365 (it comes with Defender, which is functional). Don't run two real-time AV tools simultaneously.

Fits as the first thing you install. Runs silently, doesn't require configuration, and has the detection rates to protect you while you're still setting everything else up.

Go to Bitdefender

Makes more sense if you're technical and want control over what gets scanned and when — better for developers or power users setting up a specific-purpose machine.

Go to ESET
NoteA new computer doesn't mean a clean one — preinstalled software, manufacturer bloatware, and OEM trial software can include things worth removing. Run a Malwarebytes scan after initial setup even if you installed another AV.
