Quick decision
I'm on Apple devices — should I use iCloud Keychain or a dedicated manager
iCloud Keychain is built in and free. It works well if you only use Apple devices and Safari. The question is whether you need what it doesn't provide: cross-browser access, emergency access, secure notes, or vault portability.
Stay with iCloud Keychain if your entire life is Apple and Safari. Switch to Bitwarden or Proton Pass if you ever use Chrome, Firefox, Windows, or Android — or if emergency access matters.
Bitwarden
Fits if cross-browser or cross-ecosystem access is the trigger. Safari extension and iOS autofill work well. Free unlimited tier, imports from iCloud Keychain via CSV export.
Proton Pass
Makes more sense if moving credentials outside Apple's ecosystem for privacy reasons matters — Swiss jurisdiction, metadata encryption, not tied to your Apple ID.
iCloud Keychain ties vault access to your Apple ID. If you lose Apple ID access, you lose credential access. A dedicated manager adds an independent authentication layer.
