What people assume
Most people assume a VPN on a phone works the same as on a laptop. The use patterns are different. Phones switch networks constantly — Wi-Fi, mobile data, different towers — and each switch can interrupt a VPN tunnel. What's invisible on a laptop becomes noticeable on a phone.
Most people assume mobile data is safe and only Wi-Fi needs a VPN. Mobile data is encrypted between the phone and the carrier's network — but your carrier can still see your traffic. The risk model isn't the same as public Wi-Fi, but it isn't private either.

No guarantees
A VPN on a phone uses battery. How much depends on the protocol and how often the tunnel reconnects. Always-on VPN on mobile is a real tradeoff.
Mobile data is not equivalent to public Wi-Fi in terms of risk. The threat model is different. A VPN on mobile data protects from your carrier — not from the same exposure as an open network.
A VPN can't fix geo-restrictions caused by app store region locks, payment method country restrictions, or account-level location settings. Those operate above the network layer.
